Virginia City Climate

Nestled in the picturesque Virginia Range of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Virginia City lies at 6,200 feet elevation – making for some very enjoyable but also very interesting weather conditions. We typically enjoy over 300 days of blue skies and sunshine each year and our cool, clean air affords some beautiful views of the high desert by day, and a sky full of starry constellations by night. The four seasons are generally mild and quite enjoyable on most days. Here’s a brief look at what to expect during each season:

Spring – Spring in the high desert brings forth a wealth of mountain wildflowers, as well as life and color to Virginia City’s numerous residential gardens. The cool mountain air can linger long into spring and an occasional snow flurry may occur in May or even early June. Keep your jacket handy for evening walks.

Summer – One of the many blessings of residing at 6,200 feet is a consistently cooler summer than the valley towns and cities below us. Virginia City generally stays 10-12 degrees cooler than Reno and Carson City throughout the summer, giving us daytime high temperatures of 75-85 degrees. The sun is warm and the air is dry, so drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. As the sun sets behind Mt. Davidson to the west, it’s common to have the “Washoe Zephyrs” begin to blow, making summer evenings breezy and cool. Shorts and T-shirts are perfect for most days but don’t leave your jacket at home.

Autumn – The nights begin to cool and the Cottonwood trees turn a brilliant yellow. The Mule Deer, coyotes, and California quail all become more active and visible. The clouds may roll over the mountain and spit a few unexpected snowflakes our way and the smell of burning firewood wafts from home chimneys. Bring along your jacket and your camera!

Winter – Once again, the blessings of high elevation reward us. Yes, we get a few snowstorms, but we also stay 5-10 degrees warmer than the valleys below us. When it does snow, the Pinyon Pines and Junipers dotting our hillsides don a white blanket and sparkle in the sunshine that doesn’t stay away for long.
